Fossil hunting in Belgium

Belgium's fossil heritage is anchored by the 1878 discovery of more than 30 articulated Iguanodon skeletons at the Bernissart coal mine — among the first complete dinosaur skeletons ever recovered and still the centrepiece of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels.

Fossil collection in Belgium is regulated by regional heritage law; the Bernissart site itself is no longer accessible (the coal mine closed and flooded long ago) and the fossils are entirely curated at RBINS in Brussels. Visitor access is via the museum's Dinosaur Gallery.

Other Belgian fossil destinations include the Devonian limestones of the Ardennes and the Cretaceous chalk of Limburg, though access typically requires landowner or municipal permission.

Top picks: Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Brussels (the Bernissart Iguanodons in their century-old glass case, one of the world's great dinosaur exhibits).
