Fossil hunting in New Zealand

New Zealand's geological history as part of the eastern Gondwanan margin produced some of the world's most accessible Jurassic petrified forests, plus important Eocene whale and penguin sites in the South Island. Most fossil heritage is managed by the Department of Conservation.

Collecting at all DOC-managed sites is prohibited; the model is in-situ viewing on coastal rock platforms, beaches, and short walks. Practical access is excellent — the Southern Scenic Route in Otago and Southland passes most of the marquee fossil localities.

Curio Bay's Petrified Forest is best viewed at low tide; check Bluff or Tautuku tide times before visiting and allow the platform to drain after high tide. Combine with wildlife viewing — Hector's dolphins, yellow-eyed penguins, and fur seals share the same coast.

Top picks: Curio Bay Petrified Forest, Catlins (Middle Jurassic petrified forest, free in-situ viewing at low tide).
