Fossil hunting in Argentina

Argentina holds the most complete continental Triassic record on Earth at Ischigualasto Provincial Park, plus the Patagonian dinosaur beds that have produced many of the largest sauropods ever described (Argentinosaurus, Patagotitan). The Andean foothills and Patagonian steppe are world-class destinations.

Most of Argentina's important fossil sites are within provincial parks and require guided access on a fixed circuit. Off-road travel and collecting are prohibited under federal heritage law. Distances are long — plan multi-day road trips and bring water, fuel, and a 4WD where required.

The Ischigualasto–Talampaya UNESCO World Heritage Site is the must-see for any visitor: a 40 km loop in vehicle convoy through wind-carved Triassic badlands, with a site museum mid-circuit. Full-moon night tours run monthly.

Top picks: Ischigualasto Provincial Park, San Juan (Triassic dinosaurs, guided only); Talampaya National Park, La Rioja (Triassic, guided only, paired with Ischigualasto).
