Fossil hunting in Italy
Italy preserves world-class Eocene marine Lagerstätten in the Veneto, Triassic marine reptiles in the Lombard Pre-Alps, and Pleistocene megafauna across the peninsula. The Pesciara di Bolca near Verona has been worked exclusively for fossils since 1817.
All fossils in Italy are state property under the Codice dei Beni Culturali (2004); collection by visitors is prohibited at every major site. Access at the marquee Lagerstätten is via paid guided tours arranged through local museums or geological parks.
Most major sites are accessible from Verona, Milan, or Bologna with modest driving. Combine fossil visits with food, wine, and architecture for a complete cultural-paleontological itinerary.
Top picks: Pesciara di Bolca, Verona (Eocene fish Lagerstätte, guided underground quarry tour March–November).
