Erenhot Dinosaur Geopark Fossil Hunting Guide

A national geopark on the Mongolian border built over the Iren Dabasu beds, where a hall roofs part of the excavation so the bone layer stays visible in place. The formation has produced oviraptorosaurs, therizinosaurs and hadrosauroids since the 1920s.

Introduction

Erenhot sits on the Chinese side of the Mongolian border. The beds around it were among the first Asian dinosaur localities to be worked scientifically. American Museum of Natural History expeditions reached Iren Dabasu in the 1920s during the same campaigns that found the Flaming Cliffs in Mongolia.

The Iren Dabasu Formation has produced a distinctive Late Cretaceous fauna. Oviraptorosaurs, therizinosaurs and hadrosauroids are the groups it is known for, and several were named from here.

The modern geopark is a ticketed attraction rather than a research station. Its palaeontological core is a hall of around 500 square metres built over part of the excavation. So the bone layer can be seen where it lies rather than only in cases.

Erenhot has leaned into the theme. The approach road passes large dinosaur sculptures, and the town markets itself on the fossils.

Location and Directions

Erenhot is in Xilingol League, Inner Mongolia, directly on the border with Mongolia and opposite Zamyn-Uud.

GPS: 43.7215°N, 112.0035°E.

The town is reached by rail and road from Hohhot and Beijing, and it is a crossing point on the Trans-Mongolian route. The geopark lies outside the built-up area.

The site is rated a national 4A scenic area, which in the Chinese classification means a ticketed, staffed attraction with visitor facilities.

Confirm opening before you travel. This is a border region, winters are severe, and outdoor facilities may close.

What Fossils You'll Find

Nothing is collectable. The in-situ hall and the displays are what the visit consists of.

The Iren Dabasu fauna includes Gigantoraptor, an oviraptorosaur about 8 metres long, which overturned the assumption that the group stayed small. Erliansaurus and other therizinosaurs occur, as do hadrosauroids such as Bactrosaurus and Gilmoreosaurus.

Sauropod material is present. Eggs and eggshell have been recovered from the wider region.

The exposed bone in the hall is the reason to come rather than the sculptures outside. It is worth confirming that the hall is open when you book.

Gigantoraptor is the animal that made Erenhot famous beyond specialist circles. Xu Xing and colleagues described it in 2007 from the Iren Dabasu Formation. It reached about 8 metres long, stood roughly 3.5 metres at the hip and weighed between 1.4 and 2 tonnes. Its close relatives are mostly turkey-sized. Its discovery forced a rethink of how large feathered theropods could become.

Geologic History

The Iren Dabasu Formation is Late Cretaceous, and its precise age is genuinely unsettled. Older assignments put it in the Cenomanian, around 100 million years ago. Microfossil work suggests a much younger age, Campanian to Maastrichtian, which would allow correlation with the Nemegt Formation in Mongolia.

That disagreement is not a detail. It changes which faunas we compare the Erenhot animals against, and it changes the evolutionary story told about them.

The depositional setting was a river system on a broad lowland, with channel sands and overbank muds. Bone accumulated in channel deposits, which is why much of the material is disarticulated and mixed.

The 1920s expeditions are part of the site's story. Roy Chapman Andrews led American Museum of Natural History teams through this region on the way to Mongolia, and Iren Dabasu was one of their working localities. The material they collected is still studied.

Collecting Rules and Regulations

Collecting is prohibited. Chinese law treats vertebrate fossils as state property and enforcement in the Inner Mongolian border region is active.

Do not buy fossils locally and do not attempt to carry any across the border. This is a frontier crossing with customs inspection, and fossil trafficking between Mongolia and China has been prosecuted internationally.

Photograph and leave everything in place.

Therizinosaurs are the other group worth knowing here. They were theropods, so relatives of the carnivores. But they evolved leaf-shaped teeth, broad guts and enormous hand claws, and they appear to have been plant-eaters. Iren Dabasu material contributed to working that out.

Safety

The Gobi climate is extreme. Winters fall well below freezing with strong wind, and summers are hot with little shade.

Carry water. The surrounding country is open steppe and desert with few facilities.

This is a sensitive border area. Carry your passport, expect identity checks, and do not photograph border installations.

Dust storms occur in spring.

Erenhot is a border town first and a fossil destination second. Trade with Mongolia dominates, and the dinosaur theme has been built up deliberately to draw visitors off the crossing route.

The unresolved age is the thing to carry away. The Erenhot animals float between two very different comparisons until the formation is dated securely. They are either contemporaries of mid-Cretaceous Asian faunas or of the much later Nemegt assemblage in Mongolia. Both stories are currently defensible.

Erenhot markets the theme heavily. Large dinosaur sculptures line the approach road, including a pair arching over the highway, and they are among the most photographed objects in the town. They are not fossils, and the hall over the excavation is the part worth the ticket.
